Investigating the Prognosis of Pulmonary Patients Based On the NLR Index

Abstract

Introduction: The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), derived from complete blood count differentials, serves as a marker of systemic inflammation. Given that neutrophil counts normally increase and lymphocyte counts may decrease with the progression of inflammatory disease, this study investigates the prognostic utility of the NLR in pulmonary patients.

Methods: This was a descriptive-analytical, cross-sectional study carried out between January and June 2021. Data were collected from 2500 COVID-19 patients admitted to Imam Khomeini Hospital in Urmia using a census sampling method. The demographic information checklist was used to collect the data.

Results: The results exhibited that out of 2500 participants, the majority were female (54.1%; 1353), the age group between 50-59 years (22.2%; 556) was most represented, and 85.2% (2129) had been discharged from the hospital. The average WBC in the studied patients was 10056.51±8268.11, and the average neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio was 8.2±7.2. The mean hospitalization period was 5.9±7.5 days. Moreover, a significant relationship was found between disease outcome, hospitalization department, age, and length of hospitalization with the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio.

Conclusion: According to our results, with an increase in the NLR ratio, the death rate of patients with covid-19 as well as the rate of hospitalization in ICU increases, and this ratio is higher in older patients.
