Abstract

Introduction: Atorvastatin and endurance training (ET) may have synergic positive effects on inflammation process, following myocardial infarction (MI). Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the combined effect of endurance training and three doses of atorvastatin on serum interleukin-10 (IL-10) levels following experimental myocardial infarction in rats.

Methods: 75 rats (age 8-10 weeks and 230±10 g body weight) were randomly divided to 9 groups. Sham, control, endurance training, atorvastatin (5, 10 and 15 mg/kg), and exercise plus atorvastatin (5, 10 and 15 mg/kg). MI was induced by subcutaneous injection of isoprenaline (150 mg/kg) in two consecutive days. Drug and training intervention was initiated 2 days after MI and continued for 4 weeks. Data were analyzed by using one-way analyses of variance (ANOVA) at P<0.05 level.

Results: Combined ET with taking 10 mg/kg atorvastatin significantly increased serum levels of IL-10 (P=0.001), but the combined effect of ET and atorvastatin (5 and 15 mg/kg), ET alone and three doses of atorvastatin alone (5, 10 and 15 mg/kg) was not significant.

Conclusion: It seems that combined endurance training with taking 10 mg/kg atorvastatin is the best combination that can improve the inflammatory condition after MI.
