Dose-Dependent Modulation of Eiger, Wingless, Glob1, and Dpp mRNA Expression and Survival Outcomes in Drosophila melanogaster Exposed to Aqueous Datura stramonium Leaf Extract

Introduction: Datura stramonium is a widely used medicinal and psychoactive plant known for its tropane alkaloids and other bioactive compounds. While its toxicological effects are well recognized, its molecular impact on developmental and stress-related pathways remains underexplored. This study investigated the effects of aqueous D. stramonium leaf extract on the expression of key regulatory genes [Eiger, Wingless, Glob1, and Dpp] in Drosophila melanogaster.
Conclusion: These findings indicate that D. stramonium exposure disrupts key molecular pathways in D. melanogaster, triggering stress and defence responses while suppressing morphogenetic signalling. The observed molecular alterations, coupled with reduced survival, highlight the plant’s potent dose-dependent toxicity and the importance of its controlled use.
