Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study is to investigate the body mass indexes and physical activities of 11-14 year -old adolescent boys in Khooshab.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 300 male students aging 11-14 years old in Khooshab (2009). Subjects were selected via random sampling. Underweight, overweight and obesity were defined based on the 5th, 85th and 95th percentiles of body mass index (BMI) for age and sex, respectively, as proposed by CDC, 2000. Physical activity levels were assessed by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Sedentary behaviors and socioeconomic status of subjects were assessed by means of a researcher- made questionnaire.

Results: The overall prevalence of underweight and overweight-obesity was 16% and 3.38%, respectively. The levels of light; intermediate, and heavy physical activity among the obese subjects were 19, 24 and 15, among normal subjects were 19, 44, and 36, and among the lean ones were 22, 60 and 41 mins in 24 hours. Physical activity levels significantly were lower (P<0.01) in overweight-obese subjects than in normal-weight and underweight subjects. Television watching times were higher (P<0.05) in overweight-obese subjects than normal-weight subjects. Education levels of parents were significantly higher in overweight-obese subjects than normal-weight subjects.

Conclusion: we concluded that prevalence of underweight was higher than prevalence overweight and obesity among 11-14 year-old adolescent boys in Khooshab. Furthermore, physical activity was not related to body mass index and increase in sedentary behaviors (television waticng) were related with obesity and overweight in our subjects.
