Effects of Hesperidin and Malvidin on Cisplatin-Induced Hepatotoxicity in Rats

Introduction: Cisplatin is a very effective chemotherapy drug in the treatment of various cancers, but several side effects such as drug toxicity, kidney toxicity and neuropathy cause a decrease in the dosage of this drug. Present study was conducted with the aim of investigating the protective effects of hesperidin and malvidin on liver damage caused by cisplatin injection in rats.
Methods: Rats [n=32] were randomly assigned to four equal groups: 1- Control group: injected salin [0.5 ml, ip], 2- Cisplatin group [6 mg/kg, i.p, single dose] 3-Malvidin group [100 mg/kg, P.O, 21 days] + Cisplatin in next day [6 mg/kg, i.p, single dose] and mg/kg, P.O] + Cisplatin in next day [6 mg/kg, i.p, single dose]. After 96 hours from cisplatin injection, all rats were anesthetized and blood samples and liver tissue was collected.
Results: In the cisplatin group, the values of AST, ALT, and MDA were significantly higher and GSH, CAT and SOD was significantly lower than the control group. In the malvidin and hesperidin groups, the levels of AST, ALT and MDA significantly decreased and GSH and CAT increased significantly in contrast to cisplatin group. in addition, in hesperidin group, SOD increased in contrast to cisplatin group.
Conclusion: Treatment with malvidin and hesperidin reduces the side effects caused by cisplatin injection by improving liver function and reducing oxidative stress.
